Recommended Chat Software

Home

Even though we provide a very good web-based chat program that you can use very easily with your web browser, we recommend that you install and use a dedicated Desktop application, rather than using your web browser. Why? Because a dedicated chat program uses far less resources than your web browser does, which results in better response. Most dedicated chat programs have more features than our web-based programs as well.

There are many different chat programs available for free downloading that will work with our server. We have tested a few of them and list them here.

  • Exodus - Runs on Windows systems. We tested this and had no issues with it. Exodus can be downloaded from several different locations. We recommend either of the following:
    Softpedia.com
    Softonic.com
  • Spark - Just like the web-based SparkWeb software that we provide, Spark was also written by the same people who wrote the server software that runs on our chat server. We tested this and had no issues with it. There is a version for Windows, Linux, and Mac. Any of them can be downloaded directly from the company website:
Igniterealtime.org - note: For Windows, download the offline version that includes the Java JRE. Save it to your hard drive, then load and run the executable that you saved to install the software.
  • Gossip - This runs on Linux and is designed for the Gnome Desktop but will also run on the KDE Desktop. We tested this and had no issues with it. You can find this available for downloading and installing with most Linux distributions. Simply use your included package manager to install it.
There are many other chat programs available as well, we only tested the ones listed above. Based on our tests with these, we assume that most any properly written chat program designed for the XMPP/Jabber protocol will function correctly.

There is a fairly detailed list of other chat programs on Xmpp.org. The list also includes some software available for mobile phones so you can join in when you are away from home.
